Chlorite is a metamorphic rock that can be found in ophiolites or areas with a high degree of regional metamorphism. The stone was mostly considered within a wide cultural context and for long-term usage due to its unique, fashioned characters and prestigious green-grey color tone. Due to its low hardness, chlorite is relatively easy to carve, and was a material of choice for small artefacts. Around the Persian Gulf, this stone was excavated in prehistory and antiquity, which was used to make vessels and small objects from the Neolithic to modern days. Between the third and second millennium before the Common Era, in the south and southeast of Iran, chlorite objects were prestige objects associated with funerary practices and were traded over long distances. Since the first discoveries, there have been debates about their provenance, but because the archaeological knowledge about the fashioned raw reservoirs in these regions is deeply complex, the nature, chronology, and modalities of this chlorite production and trade are still largely unknown. Therefore, the goal of this research is to synthetise the differences between the three main styles traded around the Persian Gulf - namely the Intercultural, Umm an-Nar and Wadi Suq styles - and describe their particularities, distribution, and production areas. The basis of this part was the conception of some focal points, listing as exhaustively as possible the occurrences of chlorite artefacts, as well as the mapping of their distributions, and their formation in diverse geological contexts.

The Sheikh Safi Ardebili complex is of great importance in terms of Islamic architecture. In this building, all the different techniques of decoration are mixed together, from paintings on plaster to mosaic tiles and glazed tiles, and even the oldest brickwork technique. The sanctity of art among the architects and artists of the Safavid period has led to the creation of architectural masterpieces. The influence of the mystical teachings of these artists on the use of various geometric motifs in the architectural works of the Safavid period is inevitable. The connection between the mystical meanings of numbers and geometric shapes, as well as mathematics, with other crafts is inevitable in creating architectural works. Architectural motifs are not only decorative, but also reflect a monotheistic worldview and a tangible manifestation of mystical behavioral concepts. The main purpose of this research is to examine the geometric motifs in the motifs of the tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardebili (recognizing shapes and numbers) and then the possibility of their semantic connection with mystical themes. The research method is descriptive-analytical based on library studies and field observations. In addition to revealing the connection between mystical behavior and architecture, examining the Sheikh Safi complex from a mystical perspective provides a basis for a deeper understanding of the interaction between the mysticism of geometry and the architectural forms used in this building. The use of numbers and numerical symbols used in mysticism refers to the mystery of the universe and the semantic connection between mystical thoughts, nature, mathematics, and geometry, which are reflected in the architectural decorations of the Sheikh Safi complex. The combination and rotation of various knot devices create different geometric patterns in the architectural decorations of this complex. The movement of different geometric patterns around a main axis (circle, dome, and rotating shapes) is a symbol of the connection between the components. The integration and continuity between the components and the entire building is a symbol of the connection of the universe to the divine world.<br>

This paper challenges the prevailing negative stance towards reconstruction found in international conservation charters and examines the ethical position of restoring decorative elements in the historical buildings of the Middle East. The author argues that within the socio-cultural context of this region, reconstruction under specific conditions is not only permissible but ethically imperative. Adopting a qualitative approach and a multiple case study method, this research investigates prominent reconstruction projects in Iran (the Atiq Mosque in Isfahan, the Emam Jomeh House in Tehran) and Syria (Palmyra, the Aleppo Souq). The theoretical foundation of the study integrates philosophical discussions on ethics, international charters (such as the Venice Charter), and regional documents (such as the Sharjah Charter). The findings indicate that the exclusive emphasis on "material authenticity" in conventional conservation theories is insufficient for addressing the living and dynamic heritage of the Middle East. Reconstruction gains ethical justification when it considers cultural continuity, social function, and collective memory alongside material authenticity. Successful case studies highlight the importance of local community participation, the use of traditional techniques, and transparent documentation in ethically justifying reconstruction. Consequently, the study concludes that it is necessary to develop a context-specific ethical framework for reconstruction in the Middle East. This framework should strike a balance between material authenticity and socio-cultural necessities, recognizing reconstruction as a means to enhance cultural resilience and facilitate post-war community healing. Principles such as "authenticity of function," "the right to cultural inheritance," and "transparency in documentation" can guide this framework.<br> <br> <br>

Tracing and understanding the importance of pre-Islamic Iranian design patterns can lead to identifying the early models and origins of decorative elements in Islamic art. One of the earliest examples that can contribute to recognizing the foundational motifs of the Islamic period is the ornamentation found in the Qur’an of Ibn al-Bawwab (preserved in the Chester Beatty Library). The similarity between the motifs in Ibn al-Bawwāb’s Qur’an and Sasanian double-wing designs is striking. From a formal and stylistic perspective, the visual parallels between these Sasanian motifs and those employed in this Qur’an are so strong that they reinforce the theory that Ibn al-Bawwāb—drawing on his Iranian heritage and his familiarity with ancient Persian art and culture—incorporated these traditions creatively and innovatively in his designs. The resemblance is such that Sasanian motifs can be considered as the earlier prototypes influencing Ibn al-Bawwāb. This article aims to trace the origins of the decorative motifs in the Qur’an of Ibn al-Bawwāb. The study is based on formal comparison and descriptive analysis. The findings suggest that, after examining both sets of motifs and following their morphological and structural characteristics, it is highly probable that Sasanian double-wing motifs served as primary models in the design of the Chester Beatty Qur’an’s ornamentation. In both sets of motifs, a symmetrical teardrop-like form combined with fine feather-like details creates the impression of wings radiating from the center of a circular medallion. The morphology of both groups reflects an abstracted double-wing form in which the feathers are gathered and gently curve upward, ending in a soft arc. Thus, through observing and comparing the two categories of motifs, one may reasonably conclude that Sasanian double-wing patterns functioned as the underlying antecedents that inspired Ibn al-Bawwab in producing new and innovative designs.</span>

Nishapur, as the largest city in Greater Khorasan, has preserved beautiful gypsum-based stucco ornaments due to its climate and environmental conditions. Numerous archaeological excavations have been conducted in this city, among which the most significant are the excavations carried out by the Metropolitan Museum of New York at the four mounds known as the Old City of Nishapur and the archaeological investigations at the Shadyakh site. During the excavations at the Old City of Nishapur, remains of diverse architectural ornaments were uncovered, including brickwork, gypsum-based stucco ornaments, and polychrome and monochrome murals. In the Kohandezh area, the oldest part of the Old City, evidence of the use of stucco materials was also found. Archaeological surveys at the Shadyakh site led to the discovery of numerous architectural ornaments, including gypsum-based stucco fragments and murals. These findings indicate that Shadyakh once featured magnificent architectural structures. The gypsum-based works found in Nishapur are often in the form of panels with embossed motifs. At Shadyakh, some examples with human reliefs were also identified. The stucco motifs include geometric, vegetal, and epigraphic designs, which bear a remarkable resemblance to the Abbasid gypsum-based stucco ornaments in Samarra. The backgrounds of these panels, commonly used in wall and dado ornamentation, were adorned with geometric patterns, and traces of blue and red pigments have been observed on some of them. Some of the stucco ornaments discovered by the American archaeological team have been transferred to the Metropolitan Museum and the National Museum of Iran, while others are housed in the Greater Khorasan Museum. A portion of the findings remains preserved at the Shadyakh site.
Palestinian Tatreez, or traditional embroidery, constitutes a valuable component of the cultural heritage of Palestinian women. Beyond its decorative function, it operates as a medium for the representation of cultural and social identity. Rooted in local history, this art form conveys women’s geographical origins, social status, and cultural beliefs through the stitching of geometric motifs imbued with symbolic meanings onto traditional garments. The significance of Tatreez intensified following the political transformations of 1948, as it transcended the realm of manual craftsmanship and became a tool of cultural resistance, the preservation of collective memory, and the reproduction of national identity. In this process, Palestinian women, by employing diverse embroidery techniques, were able to communicate their personal and collective narratives in a durable and visual form. Accordingly, the present study aims to identify the symbolic and geometric motifs of Tatreez and to examine its cultural position through a literature-based approach, addressing the question: How did Palestinian Tatreez transform from a manual skill into a cultural visual language?<br><br>Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this article seeks to demonstrate how Tatreez has evolved over time from a localized artistic practice into a cultural visual language—one that, within the context of social and historical transformations, has played a fundamental role in sustaining identity, transmitting cultural values, and representing resistance. A descriptive–comparative analysis of historical and contemporary examples reveals that Tatreez is actively present not only in traditional clothing but also in modern art, fashion design, and cultural practices. Acting as a bridge between past and present, it offers new possibilities for reinterpreting heritage and generating new meanings. Thus, Palestinian Tatreez may be understood as a complex cultural system that simultaneously preserves long-standing traditions and inspires contemporary creative expressions.
